  1. Jessica McQueen Says:

One word. This is disusting. It is sad that arts is conisder so low in culture. If these cuts go on who knows where we will be in ten years time.

  2. mattbg Says:

Obviously I don’t. But why are there so many groups ostensibly doing the same thing? There seems to be a lot of duplication in the type of work being done.

It will be interesting to see which ones survive and which ones don’t.

  3. jessicaruano Says:

    Hi Matt,

Which groups are you referring to? A lot of the cuts are going to individual festivals, organizations, theatre groups, art galleries. I could argue that they are all working at different things, but I guess it depends how you look at it.

    Is that what you mean?

  4. mattbg Says:

Well, there are a lot of choirs/chorals/singing groups, museums, and a number of organizations that you can’t tell what they do by their names (societies, associations, networks)… they probably do all do different things, but who knows which ones are worth their funding?

Anyway, obviosuly, it’s pretty serious to cut this many things, but I am always interested in where they draw the line between what qualifies and what doesn’t…. because we can’t really just fund everything that wants funding, can we?

The only ones I can say for sure that I don’t think should be cut from that list are the historical societies.

  5. Artsy Fartsy Says:

if the budget is passed with the proposed funding cuts intact then local artists will have no choice but to become more CREATIVE in how they secure funding for future projects…while i don’t believe it will be the death of the arts in Ottawa, I do think it will force a consolidation of sorts with the end result being fewer companies/troupes/festivals/venues in each discipline…while the proposed cuts would mean the end for many local forms of artistic expression that we have become accustomed to, there will still be patrons of the arts who are looking to be entertained…for what it’s worth, in the long run i believe that the artists and arts organizations that are still in business will benefit from a less segmented market and higher individual revenues…as for what is ‘worthy’ of funding, i think that is strictly a subjective opinion or perhaps maybe a function of market demand depending on your POV…

  6. Sean Kay Says:

Wow, talk about good ol’ fat city Ottawa, the city that can’t make anything except debt. Someone should just go in with a blow torch and burn about 90% of all these programs. How did they ever push through the funding in the first place?
