Ottawa Arts: May Edition

Greetings Arts Fans!

This spring, Ottawa is brimming with exciting arts events, and I’m determined to attend as many of them as possible. If you’ve had enough of the hockey playoffs, here are some entertaining options beyond your TV room couch.

CAPITAL POETRY COLLECTIVE presents Capital Slam: Semi Finals Thursday, May 11th (this week!) @ 8pm in a *new location* the Velvet Room, 62 York Street in the Byward Market, above Fat Tuesdays. After a full eight-month season of exhilirating slam poetry competitions, the scores have been tallied and the top twelve poets in Ottawa have been selected to compete in the Capital Slam playoffs. These talented and enthusiastic poets are: Ritallin, DJ Morales, Jim Thomas, Festrell, Kevin Matthews, Danielle Grégoire, Steve Sauvé, Nathaniel, Madame H, Mosha, Billy Ruffian, and Thomas. Stay tuned for the Finals in June! www.capitalslam.com

THIRD WALL THEATRE presents Live by Request Friday, May 19th @ 8pm in the Arts Court Library at 2 Daly Avenue. The audience gets to vote on the play they want to see, and our fabulous local artists perform a spontaneous play reading. Plus, it’s admission by donation: always good. Other upcoming events include: a Strawberry Social in June, and Euripides’ “Medea” directed by Jan Irwin in July. www.thirdwall.com

Also, “The Real Thing” by Tom Stoppard (the guy who wrote “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead”) opens at the NAC May 11th. And it has Megan Follows in it! There’s always Matthew Edison, whom I was in love with and was determined to marry for most of high school, but that’s another story…

Finally, I’m directing a Fringe show. It’s called “Québécité” by George Elliott Clarke, who happens to be brilliant. I like to describe it as “a multicultural, bilingual romance in the style of spoken word with a touch of jazz”. It’s an incredibly sexy script, and the actors are pretty hot, too. The Ottawa Fringe Festival runs from June 15th-25th. www.ottawafringe.com

That’s all for now. Feel free to contact me if you’re working on any shows that need a bit of promotion.

Artistically yours,

Jessica

Tschüß!
